The General Sir John Monash Foundation offers up to eight Scholarships per year for postgraduate study at a non-Australian university. Only Australian citizens graduating from Australian universities are eligible to apply.

Why apply for a John Monash Scholarship
The John Monash Scholarships are one of Australia’s most prestigious awards, recognizing potential leaders in all fields. To consider applying, a candidate and their referees should believe they have demonstrated excellence in their university degree, together with the ability to lead in the private or public sector. Further, they must provide a compelling case that they can make a major contribution to the advancement of Australia in their subsequent career. They must believe that completing a post-graduate qualification at an outstanding institution in another country would give them recognition, skills, and networks that equip them for a leadership role in or for Australia in coming decades.
For the eight applicants who receive a John Monash Scholarship each year, the benefits are immediate and enduring. John Monash Scholars immediately achieve national and local recognition through the publicity offered to the Awards. The Scholars are then funded for up to three years of study at a leading institution in another country, achieving a qualification that equips them for a greater role. Over the longer term, the Scholars are part of a growing community – now over 50 – of outstanding young Australian leaders aspiring to preserve and enhance our nation.

Applying for the 2012 John Monash Scholarships

To apply for these Scholarships, an Applicant must complete the Application Form (download), and attach a photo, an academic transcript, and proof of citizenship (see Instructions to Applicants: download).

Three Referees must be nominated and contact details provided, but in the initial Application their reports are not required – the State Secretariats will contact these upon shortlisting for interviews. Applicants must inform the Referees upon nomination, and Instructions to Referees (download) should be forwarded to the Referees by the Applicant. Applicants will then need to provide 8-10 copies of their application package to the State Secretariats in the State to which they are applying (their State of residence and employment, or if applying from overseas, the most convenient State for an interview). The number of copies required for each State is specified on the Instructions to Applicants.

Timetable of process for selection and Award:

31 August – Close of Applications
Early September – State Panel Shortlisting, Call for Referee Reports (varies by State)
Late September – mid October – State Panel Interviews (date to be set by State)
November 7-8 – National Panel Interviews in Melbourne (Foundation supports cost of attendance)
Mid November – Offers to nominated Scholars
March 2012 – Presentation of Scholarships by Governor-General at Government House Canberra (date to be set)

The Scholarships

The John Monash Scholarships are not limited by age, gender, or academic field of study. They may be taken up at any non-Australian university, subject to that university being considered to be amongst the global leaders in the chosen field of study. While no upper age limit is stipulated, Scholarships will be made to those whose major contribution to their field and to the community lies ahead of them.

Benefits

The Scholarships provide funding of AUD $50,000 per year for a maximum of three years. The John Monash Scholarships may be held concurrently with other scholarships or awards, at the discretion of the Foundation. The annual Award sum of $50,000 is normally paid in two equal payments.

Criteria

Applicants must be Australian citizens. In awarding John Monash Scholarships, factors considered include:

Outstanding intellect – demonstrated by academic excellence (having completed or are about to complete a university degree or degrees with outstanding results, such as an honours degree (with a classification of 1 or 2A) or equivalent, scholarship, language skills, musical skills and/or publications;
Leadership – demonstrated and potential – within or outside of an Applicant’s field of study or professional field;
Citizenship – community service;
Well-defined research project or study programme to be conducted at a non-Australian University;
The case presented by the Applicant of the significance of the applicant’s potential contribution to their field and to the community;
Referee reports outlining the applicant’s abilities.

The John Monash Scholarships are available for postgraduates to attend universities that are considered to be amongst the global leaders in the field of study. Applicants should identify in their applications up to three universities to which they have sought or would seek acceptance.

Application Process

Applications will close on 31 August or the next working day.

Selection procedure:

State and Territory based Panels will shortlist applicants and recommend nominations for consideration by the National Awards Committee.
The National Awards Committee, chaired by a Director of the Foundation is responsible for examining applications and making recommendations to the Board of the Foundation, who will make the final selection of winners.
Winners of the John Monash Scholarships are informed by the CEO of the Foundation, and publically announced by the Governor-General of Australia in March.
The decision of the Board of the General Sir John Monash Foundation is final.

Tips To Get Financial Aid Scholarships

Many students know that grants and scholarships are a surefire way to help pay for the high cost of a college degree. A high level of stress doesn't need to come along with the process of applying for financial aid. With knowledge and foresight, earning financial aid to help pay for college doesn't need to be a challenge.

Students may be applying for financial aid in the form of scholarships for a number of reasons. Some scholarships are offered to students who demonstrate a financial need for monetary help and thus are considered need based. Other scholarships are merit-based and help reward students who may not demonstrate financial need, but could still benefit from financial aid. Either way, the process of applying for scholarships remains the same.

There are some steps that are simply applicable across the board, no matter what type of financial aid students are applying for. From the East coast to the West coast, these strategies have been continually employed. Staying involved in extracurricular activities like clubs, sports and volunteering will help make you into a desirable applicant when you're aiming for financial aid.

The actual process of submitting an application requires the same type of organization as keeping track of dates. Students need to be sure to read all the instructions so they don't skip or accidentally miss an important part of the scholarship's instructions. No matter how messy they are regularly, the scholarship application itself needs to be neatly handwritten or typed, with an attention to detail. Scholarship boards process hundreds of applications regularly and don't have the time to be deciphering horrible penmanship!

Students who are vying for scholarships may be drawn first and foremost to the biggest scholarships available on a national level. However, it is wisest to apply for local scholarships first. The smaller the pool of applicants, the more likely it is that students will be successful in winning their financial aid. Local colleges and universities are an excellent source of individual scholarship opportunities, and many hometown individuals and programs will also offer students financial aid. The search can be broadened only after the closest opportunities are taken advantage of.
